Compression Therapy

Meet the revolutionary technology designed by an MD, PhD that increases circulation, boosts lymphatic drainage and accelerates recovery.

  • This dynamic air compression therapy was made famous by big names from Lady Gaga to Lebron James. Normatec mimics the natural muscle pumping function of the legs, enhancing the movement of lymphatic fluid. So, what does that mean?

  • Studies show these space boots can help accelerate post-workout recovery and increase circulation while giving your lymphatic system a boost and even improving your flexibility and range of motion.

What is the Lymphatic System?

  • The human body has two main “plumbing” systems: the circulatory system and the lymphatic system.

  • The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help the body eliminate toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. On a daily basis, the lymphatic system processes between 3 and 4 litres of fluid per day.

  • One of the functions of the lymphatic system is to rid the body of substances such as hormones, fats and waste products from their tissues of origin out of the body.

  • At True North Float we rely on the lymphatic system to transport toxins from the body throughout our IR Sauna sessions. Without a healthy lymphatic response, the body cannot rid these unwanted substances and results can take longer. Normatec has a laundry list of incredible benefits that we know you’ll love, and at True North Float we use this technology to enhance our clients’ Recovery and wellness goals.

How Does it Work

  • NormaTec Pulse Massage Pattern employs three key techniques to maximise your relaxation, rehab & recovery:

  • Instead of using static compression (squeezing) to transport fluid out of your legs, the boots use dynamic compression (pulsing) along the 5 zones from the feet to the groin. The pulsing action more effectively mimics the muscle pump of the legs, greatly enhancing the movement of fluid and metabolites (byproduct of energy production) after an intense workout.

  • Veins and lymphatic vessels have one-way valves that prevent fluid from flowing away from the heart. Similarly, the Pulse Massage Pattern uses hold pressures to prevent fluids from being forced to the extremities, continuing the flow back to the heart.

Distal Release:

  • Because extended static pressure can be detrimental to the body’s normal circulatory flow, the Pulse Massage Pattern releases the hold pressure on the zones when they are no longer needed to prevent backflow. By releasing the hold pressure in each zone as soon as possible, each portion of the limb gains maximal rest time between cycles.

  • You can experience the dynamic compression for up to 2 hours but it is our recommendation that you spend no longer than 45mins continuously in the compression boots before having an active break to allow the body to reset. Our

  • Our NormaTec PRO Pulse Recovery System has 10 levels of compression with 1 being the lightest and 10 being the heaviest.

Depending on the amount of fluid build up in your legs and the amount of pressure, you may experience some pressure markings after taking the compression boots off. These markings usually disappear within 10-15 minutes.

Do they really work?

  • NormaTec compression therapy is clinically proven by a range of research studies. Research has revealed that NormaTec aids to:

  • Lessen pain sensitivity. Therefore accelerating recovery by reducing muscle soreness from pressure stimuli

  • Treat DOMS. A 30min session in the NormaTec compression boots increases blood flow possibility making it a viable management of DOMS

  • Clear metabolites Passively. NormaTec compression significantly lower blood lactate levels

  • Gene Expression in Muscle Tissue. NormaTec upgregulates rps^ and downregulates Stat1. This may assist with a positive adaptive response to exercise

  • Upgregulates PGC-1a and eNOS. A 60min session has been proven to achieve this with biopsy samples

  • Improve Endothelial Function. A single session imrpoves conduit artery endothelial function systematically and improve RH blood flow

  • Decreases Muscle Fatigue After Exercise. Increases Flexibility and skeletal muscle oxidative stress during recovery from heavy resistance training

  • Increased Range of Motion. NormaTec rapidly enhances acute range of motion with less discomfort and time

Who Uses Compression Boots

  • NormaTec boots are used by a wide variety of people. They are very few contraindications meaning they are right for lots of people for lots of reasons. So what are most common reasons why people use the NormaTec compression boots with us?

  • Pregnant and wish to decrease fluid build up in the legs. This is particularly problematic for ladies in their third trimester

  • Weekend warriors and athletes who have been training hard and have sore legs

  • People who are on their feet all day and have tied / sore legs

  • Those who sit at a desk all day and have fluid build up or poor circulation in their legs

  • Runners, cyclists, swimmers or crossfitters who are trying to freshen their legs prior to an event or race

The Research

If you want to know more and like a little scientific reading then you can look at the following PubMed articles. The four listed below provide evidence for the enhanced benefits of the NormaTec Pulse Recovery System, which have summarised highlights:

Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research 2015 May

“…We conclude that PPDC is a promising means of accelerating and enhancing recovery after the normal aggressive training that occurs in Olympic and aspiring Olympic athletes…”

Experimental Physiology 2015 July

“…PPDC upregulates metabolism and vascular function in muscle tissue…”

Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research 2014 April
